The opening behind the lens that permits light to travel to the camera's interior where the sensor is located. Aperture sizes are measured in full stops (f-stop-number) A f-stop of 22 closes the lens opening more, and a f-stop of 1.4 closes less. Typically, a fast shutter speed will require a larger aperture (small f-stop number) to ensure sufficient light exposure, and a slow shutter speed will require a smaller aperture (larger f-stop number) to avoid excessive exposure.

More technical info

The lens aperture is usually specified as an f-number, the ratio of focal length to effective aperture diameter. A lens typically has a set of marked "f-stops" that the f-number can be set to. A lower f-number denotes a greater aperture opening which allows more light to reach the film or image sensor. The photography term "one f-stop" refers to a factor of √2 (approx. 1.41) change in f-number, which in turn corresponds to a factor of 2 changes in light intensity.

Shutter Speed

The duration, for which the camera's aperture is opened, thereby allowing light to stream in. Longer shutter speeds leave the aperture open longer, letting more light in and resulting in more exposure.

White Balance (extra info)

Human eyes compensate for lighting conditions with different colours of light. A digital camera, however, requires a reference point that represents white. It then calculates all other colours based upon this setting.

MP (Megapixel)

A megapixel (MP) is 1 million pixels, and is a term used not only for the number of pixels in an image, but also to express the number of image sensor elements of digital cameras.

A camera with an array of 2048×1536 sensor elements is commonly said to have "3.1 megapixels" (2048 × 1536 = 3,145,728). The more megapixels you have, the more quality in the photo you take.

Important note!!

The more megapixels (sensor elements) you squash onto a camera photo-light sensor, the warmer the sensor gets. That is why professional SLR cameras have physically bigger size photo sensors.

The problem with high-megapixel, small sensor elements, is that they overheat in low light conditions, and you get noise on your photos as a result. ( See example of photo with noise below at "Noise" )

Image sensor

An image sensor is a device that converts an optical image to an electric signal. It is used mostly in digital cameras and other imaging devices. The image sensor replaced the film that was used in older cameras.

Noise

Grainy photos with randomly scattered coloured pixels that break up smooth areas. This is what's known as noise.

To take a picture with noise, do the following.

Step 1: Go to a dimly lit room or wait until it is darkening outside.

Step 2: Set your camera to a high ISO setting, 800 for example.

Step 3: Disable the flash.

Step 4: Set the shutter speed slow enough to allow for good exposure.

Step 5: Take a photo of something and look at it on your computer.

Low-nicotine cigarettes are used by some smokers as a first step to slow down their deathly addiction. Researchers doubt that strategy.Light cigarettes contain less nicotine compared to regular cigarettes, but deliver nearly as much of a nicotine punch to the brain. Even this smaller amount engages a significant percentage of the brain's nicotine receptors, leading to a rush of the chemical dopamine and gives smokers a pleasurable feeling. De-nicotinized cigarettes contains only a trace of nicotine, but even these release enough nicotine to engage an effective amount of the brain's nicotine receptors, according to Dr. Arthur L. Brody, a UCLA psychiatry professor. Participants were examined with positron emission tomography scans of their brains after smoking regular, light, and de-nicotinized cigarettes. The study was published online in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology.

Electronic cigarettes poisonous

The World Health Organisation warned that so-called "electronic cigarettes", which claim to be a nicotine replacement therapy, could in fact prove highly poisonous. "It's 100% false to affirm this is a therapy for smokers to quit," WHO anti-tobacco official Douglas Bettcher told journalists. "There are a number of chemical additives in the product which could be very toxic," he warned. Electronic cigarettes are usually made of stainless steel and have a chamber for storing liquid nicotine in various concentrations. Users puff on them as they would a real cigarette but do not light them - rather the cigarettes produce a fine, heated mist which is absorbed into the lungs.

"Manufacturers of this electronic cigarette around the world have included WHO's name or logo, for example on their website, on package inserts or on advertisements," Bettcher said, without naming any company or manufacturer. The electronic cigarette was first developed in China in 2004, and is now sold in several other countries including Brazil, Britain, Canada, Finland and Turkey.

U.S. researchers have found a significant relationship between alcohol consumption and brain shrinkage. The study was based on an analysis of drinking habits and brain volume in about 2,000 U.S. adults. MRI scans showed that drinkers brains shrunk much more than non-drinkers. Even previous sippers’ was affected and women’s “grey matter” experienced the most weight-less effects...This study suggests that, unlike the associations with cardiovascular disease, alcohol consumption does not have any protective effect on brain volume.

Study shows why once is enough to hook some smokers

Researchers in Canada have found a region in the brains of rats that may be the key to why, for some people, one cigarette is all it takes to become hooked on nicotine, while others are repelled by it. By manipulating specific molecular doorways into receptors, they were able to control which rats in the study enjoyed or repelled their first exposure to nicotine. They found that specific receptors of the message-carrying chemical, dopamine, in the core and shell of the nucleus accumbens, controlled whether the rats enjoyed or were repelled by nicotine. When the researchers blocked two types of dopamine receptors with drugs delivered to these areas of the nucleus accumbens, the rats experienced nicotine as a positive, rewarding experience. The researchers also were able to reverse this process, making the nicotine unpleasant in rats that had the equivalent of a "pack-a-day" nicotine addiction. "If we can develop pharmacological treatments to target those regions, we can basically affect the development of nicotine addiction by controlling the brain's perception of nicotine's rewarding effects," Laviolette said.

Harmful Consequences of Alcohol Use on the Brain.

Comprehensive research on how alcohol affects the brains of youth reveals just how harmful drinking is to the developing brain. The average age of a child's first drink is now 12. Nearly 20 percent of 12 to 20 year-olds are considered binge drinkers. Frontal lobe development and the refinement of pathways and connections continue until age 16, and a high rate of energy is used as the brain matures until age 20. Damage from alcohol at this time can be long-term and irreversible. Adolescents need only drink half as much to suffer the same negative effects as adults. Alcohol affects the sleep cycle, resulting in impaired learning and memory as well as disrupted release of hormones necessary for growth and maturation. Those who binge once a week or increase their drinking from age 18 to 24 may have problems attaining marriage, educational attainment, employment, and financial independence. A major source of the normalization of alcohol use by children and youth is alcohol advertising. With these new findings the AMA calls on TV networks to pledge not to run alcohol ads targeted at underage youth.

Prescription drug addictions on the rise

11 year old, Sarah Roisman’s doctors prescribed her a muscle relaxant for seizures. By age 14, Sarah was hooked. Prescription drug abuse shot to prominence with the death of Hollywood actor Heath Ledger, who plays in the film Batman, The Dark Night, after he took six different prescriptions. The list of prescription drug overdoses is growing. In some age groups, prescription drug deaths now surpass motor vehicle deaths as America's #1 cause of accidental death. More Americans abused prescription drugs in 2007 than cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, Ecstasy, and marijuana combined. The number of Americans treated for abuse of painkillers surged 321 percent from 1995 to 2005. There's very low social disapproval. There are parents who are almost relieved that their kid is using Vicodin (painkillers containing hydrocodone and paracetamol) and not smoking marijuana. For many children, getting the drugs is simple. Roisman and her friends raided family medicine cabinets for OxyContin (a synthetic morphine), Ritalin and Vicodin - until she eventually passed out one day in school. A drug test showed she had seven different drugs in her system. “People think that it's okay because it's a prescribed pill. It comes from a credible source.” said Roisman, who became sober after two years of treatment at a rehab.

New research proves the use of marijuana have no benefits at all.

A study conducted by the Orygen Research Centre and the University of Melbourne, has shown that long-term heavy use of marijuana may cause the hippocampus and amygdala to shrink in heavy marijuana users. Heavy cannabis users scored much lower than non-users in a verbal learning task. Quitting marijuana caused irritability, anxiety, sleep problems and difficulty concentrating. Teens using marijuana increased their risk of developing a mental disorder by 40%. 45- to 64-year-olds who reported regularly smoking marijuana in the year before a heart attack were two to four times more likely to die within the next four years. An Austrian study conducted at the Medical University of Vienna, found that oral cannabis was ineffective in treating certain types of acute pain and actually increased sensitivity to some other kinds of discomfort. The researchers admitted they were surprised to find an absence of any form of analgesic activity of THC-standardised cannabis extract during their study and instead found that high doses of cannabinoids may even caused increased sensitivity in certain pain conditions.

Craving Mechanism Behind Cocaine Identified

A possible future way to prevent relapses into drug dependence has been discovered by researchers at Linkoping University and the German cancer research center DKFZ. The target is the dopamine-producing nerve cells in the midbrain.
Earlier research has shown that these cells become more excitable when a person takes drugs. To find out the functional meaning of this, these researchers used a mouse model for cocaine dependence. When they blocked the cells' receptors for glutamate , the brain's most important signal substance , the risk of relapsing into addiction vanished. The findings are being published in the highly ranked journal Neuron.
Dopamine-producing nerve cells are central to the brain's reward system. Dependence-inducing drugs cause concentrations of dopamine to rise in the surroundings, which in turn affects other nerve cells and brings about various physical and mental reactions.
Cocaine has a very rapid impact on dopamine levels, which explains why it is one of the most addictive drugs.
"When you take cocaine, the number of glutamate receptors increases, rendering the cell more excitable. When we block this process, we prevent relapses into addiction. This is interesting clinically since that is the phase when we can get hold of patients," says David Engblom, a neurobiologist at Linköping University and the study's lead author.
An addict who wants to give up drugs could thus be offered a 'vaccination' against relapsing. But much more research remains to be done before such treatment can become a reality.

Escape from a life of Misery

My parents separated when I was about 7 or 8 years of age.
Alcohol and Cigarettes were commonly used in our family and sometimes even marijuana /grass.

We traveled around a lot and as a result I attended about
10 different schools, but let me start at the beginning....

My sister and I lived with my mother and father until I was about 8 or 9 years old. Alcohol and cigarettes was a serious problem, and my parents were constantly arguing and fighting.

One day when I was at school, the fighting got really bad. When I got home a social worker was waiting to take
us to a place of safety.
Some time later my sister and I were taken to a family where we would stay for a year.
After I had caused a lot of trouble, the family decided to put us in an orphanage.

We stayed for five years in two different orphanages, where we were forced to go to church, but after church the grown-ups would drink their Alcohol and continue with life as if church
had no affect on them. As a result I thought church was a waist of time.

At the end of Grade7, my sister and I were sent home for good.
I couldn't make friends. Nobody wanted to befriend me. I started to 'bunk' school, I hated school. I skipped school very often. Somehow I managed to pass Grade 8.

I started drinking alcohol, after school, at the age of 15.

Later I left school completely and started to live my own life, doing just what I wanted to. I made a lot of bad friends.
Together we visited disco's and bar's where we would drink ourselves into a stupor.
Later on it wasn't just a weekend adventure, but something we wanted to do as often as possible.

I took on to sniffing/huffing petrol, glue, thinners, etc. and it became my life... I even started drinking bottles of cough syrup.

At one stage I went to stay with my sister and her boyfriend. Almost daily we would take a case of beer, and time and time again we would finish it off.

Later I walked away from there with a suitcase, a rucksack and a bag
full of electrical equipment and a 9mm pistol. I left the electrical equipment and the gun at a friends house with plans to sell it later.

This friend convinced me to smoke for the first time - marijuana /grass on top of it all. My friends father saw the electrical appliances and called in the police. Now the police were on my track. I fled to look for work, without success.

Disappointed with life and with myself I watched as people drove past me in smart cars, people living in nice houses, who knew the good side of life. I realized that I had nothing and that my life was a mess. There was no hope for me. I was desperate for a change in my life

There had to be something better.

I asked my Creator to show Himself to me, so that I could serve Him, I realised that I needed the real and living God in my life, and told Him that I would serve Him if He would show Himself to me.
I didn't want to waste any time serving just any god, I wanted to serve my Maker.

The following day while hitch-hiking, I met another hitchhiker who told me about a Mission
Station where we could go to rest before we went to to look for work. (My prayer of the previous day was long forgotten.)

At the mission we were told that we could only stay for about 4 days. In one of the evening devotions the Lord revealed to me my sins and showed me that I was lost.

I confessed my sins to God, in the presence of a Christian brother, and brought the story about the pistol to light. Also that I intended to correct my actions.

I started working on the Mission. After 3 months I heard that somebody had phoned for me, and I knew that it was the police.
I stood at a cross-road: to flee and be - humanly speaking - free, or to stay and give it all over to the Lord.

I stayed.

A few days later, 2 Inspectors turned up at my workplace. They took me to a prison in a nearby town, where they wanted to hold me for 3 weeks until the court case. I doubt that I was there for 5 hours - somebody had paid my bail.
Somebody accompanied me to my sister's boyfriend, and he agreed to
drop the case if he could get the electrical equipment back, or equivalent of money...
and the gun.

Amazingly we found that the gun was at a Police Station, locked in a safe.
I didn't have any money, but somebody paid it for me without asking for anything in return.
The court case was closed. I went back to the mission and am still living for Him.

I am currently married and have 3 healthy children. To God be all the glory.

Radiation From Cellular Phones May Cause More Cancerous Conditions Then Tobacco

Research raises new concerns about the effects of mobile devices.

The latest study is from a famous cancer researcher from the UK. The following is an article reported by Fox News:

"A study by an award-winning cancer expert shows that cell phone use could kill more people than smoking, it is reported."

"According to the U.K.'s Independent newspaper, the study, headed by Dr. Vini Khurana, shows that there is a growing body of evidence that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer."

"Khurana -- one of the world's top neurosurgeons -- based his assessment on the fact that three billion people now use the phones worldwide. That is three times higher than people who smoke. Smoking kills some five million globally each year."

"He warned that people should avoid using handsets whenever possible and called on the phone industry to make them safer. France and Germany have already warned against the use of mobile phones, especially by children, it is reported."

"The study is said to be the most damning indictment of cell phone use. According to the Independent, cancers take at least 10 years to develop, which has influenced
earlier cancer studies showing relative safety when using cell phones."

Mobile phones severely disrupt sleep patterns, according to scientific research into their impact
on human rest, funded by the Mobile Manufacturers Association.

The research undertaken by the Electromagnetic Academy based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the United States, exposed 71 men and women, aged between 18 and 45, to mobile phone radiation as they prepared to sleep.

According to the study, monitoring under laboratory conditions showed the initial 'light' phases of
sleep in the subjects were affected. In addition, "exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals, components of sleep, believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear, are adversely affected." The research also found that those exposed to mobile
phones during their sleep appear to have more headaches, than those not exposed.

The findings coincide with calls from UK company Exradia, manufacturers of the first device proven to neutralize potentially dangerous mobile phone radiation, for more government research into the health issues being raised.

David Schick, Exradia chief executive, said, "This study is yet another example of how using
mobile phones can have a detrimental effect on humans. It is critical that the UK Government now undertakes a formal public inquiry into this issue."

France recently became the latest country to advise against excessive use of mobile phones, particularly by children. Other countries who've issued similar advice include Sweden, the UK, Israel and India.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that electro-magnetic fields or radiation that exceeds 2.5 milligauss (mG) can be harmful to human health.

"Most cellular phones emit over 5 milligauss with the average emissions over 50 milligauss," states Dr. Robert O. Young, a research scientist at the pH Miracle Living Center.

Dr. Young also states, "the hybrid cars on the drivers side is an electro-magnetic hot box of
radiation that exceeds 50 milligauss and in some hybrid cars over 100 milligauss."

"The most dangerous appliance that is used by most women is the hair dryer which exceeds over 100 milligauss and can be as high as 20,000 milligauss.
Most women have no idea that they are dousing their brain with harmful radiation from
hair dryers, their cell phones and now the cars they are driving," states Dr. Young.

"I have measured many of the large cellular phone services offered in the US for levels of EMF radiation and the only company I have found to date that has acceptable electro-magnetic field (EMF) radiation emissions below EPA standards is the Verizon Cellular phone company," states Dr. Young.

"EMF radiation from cell phones, hair dryers, automobiles, microwaves, TV's, computers,
airplanes, etc., is the most powerful acidic contributor to ill-health ever invented by man
in the last 100 years," states Dr. Young

"Most of us live in an invisible soup of radiation making us sick, tired and depressed."

"Maybe that is why we feel better when we go to the mountains or to the beach."

Innocent Chagonda was arrested on Thursday for simply demanding the release of a helicopter hired by Morgan Tsvangirai for his presidential campaign, the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and another lawyer said.

The helicopter had been confiscated by police and the pilot, a South African national, was detained on March 25 for alleged fraud and immigration transgressions. He spent nine days behind bars before being freed.

"As a party we feel this is a sustained effort on the part of the authorities against people who assist the MDC," spokesman Nelson Chamisa said.

"This is an onslaught which is not only happening in the rural areas, but even in the civil service as people who are perceived MDC supporters are being intimidated."

Zimbabwe is still awaiting the result of the presidential election on March 29. Mr Tsvangirai claims outright victory, but Mr Mugabe's ruling Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) says there must be a run-off.

The opposition on Thursday ruled out Mr Tsvangirai's participation in any second-round vote, accusing Mr Mugabe and his regime of having launched a campaign of intimidation that would affect the true democratic result.

One day in 1948, a Swiss amateur-mountaineer and inventor decided to take his dog for a nature hike. The man and his dog both returned home covered with burrs, the plant seed-sacs that cling to animal fur in order to travel to fertile new planting grounds.

With a burning curiosity he ran to his microscope, and inspected one of the many burrs stuck to his pants. He saw all the small hooks that enabled the seed-bearing burr to cling so viciously to the tiny loops in the fabric of his pants.

George de Mestral raised his head from the microscope and smiled thinking, "I will design a unique, two-sided fastener, one side with stiff hooks like the burrs and the other side with soft loops like the fabric of my pants. I will call my invention 'velcro' a combination of the word velour and crochet. It will rival the zipper in its ability to fasten."

Mestral's idea met with resistance and even laughter, but the inventor 'stuck' by his invention. Together with a weaver from a textile plant in France, Mestal perfected his hook and loop fastener. By trial and error, he realized that nylon when sewn under infrared light, formed tough hooks for the burr side of the fastener. This finished the design, patented in 1955.

The inventor formed Velcro Industries to manufacture his invention. Mestral was selling over sixty million yards of Velcro per year. Today it is a multi-million dollar industry.

The human eye is remarkable. It accommodates to changing lighting conditions and focuses light rays originating from various distances from the eye. When all of the components of the eye function properly, light is converted to impulses and conveyed to the brain where an image is perceived.

Light rays enter the eye through a transparent layer of tissue known as the cornea.

As the eye's main focusing element, the cornea takes widely diverging rays of light and bends them through the pupil, the dark, round opening in the center of the colored iris.

The lens of the eye is located immediately behind the pupil. The human eye belongs to a general group of eyes found in nature called “camera-type eyes.” Instead of film, the human eye focuses light onto a light sensitive membrane called the retina.

Here’s how the human eye is put together and how it works:

The cornea is a transparent structure found in the very front of the eye that helps to focus incoming light. Behind the cornea is a colored ring-shaped membrane called the iris.

The iris has an adjustable circular opening called the pupil, which can expand or contract depending on the amount of light entering the eye.
A clear fluid called the aqueous humor fills the space between the cornea and the iris.
Situated behind the pupil is a colorless, transparent structure called the crystalline lens. Ciliary muscles surround the lens. The muscles hold the lens in place but they also play an important role in vision.

When the muscles relax, they pull on and flatten the lens, allowing the eye to see objects that are far away. To see closer objects clearly, the ciliary muscle must contract in order to thicken the lens.
The interior chamber of the eyeball is filled with a jelly-like tissue called the vitreous humor. After passing through the lens, light must travel through this humor before striking the sensitive layer of cells called the retina.
The retina is the innermost of three tissue layers that make up the eye. The outermost layer, called the sclera, is what gives most of the eyeball its white color. The cornea is also a part of outer layer.

The middle layer between the retina and sclera is called the choroid. The choroid contains blood vessels that supply the retina with nutrients and oxygen and removes its waste products.
Embedded in the retina are millions of light sensitive cells, which come in two main varieties: rods and cones.

Rods are good for monochrome vision in poor light, while cones are used for color and for the detection of fine detail. Cones are packed into a part of the retina directly behind the retina called the fovea.

When light strikes either the rods or the cones of the retina, it's converted into an electric signal that is relayed to the brain via the optic nerve. The brain then translates the electrical signals into the images we see.

	The year was 1964. It was a time when getting aboard a commercial airliner was much easier than today. You paid your money, walked through a gate (then often across the tarmac) and boarded the plane. No X-rays, no security check points, no guards. The wave of hijackings to Cuba was still to come, only to be followed by terrorists hijackings and even worse beyond that.
It was a time when we all thought nobody was crazy enough to take a gun aboard a airliner and threaten to kill people, let alone actually shoot someone. Well on Pacific Air Lines Flight 773, that's exactly what happened. According to newspaper accounts of the time, Francisco Gonzales would constantly threaten people, especially members of his family. He said that they would die alongside him, by his hand. But what brought about his problems? Gonzales, 27, had been a member of the Philippine yachting team at the 1960 Olympics. However, by 1964 he was having trouble with his wife and also had accumulated a fair amount of debt. Then one day he apparently decided he had finally had enough. But rather than kill those around him as he had threaten, for some unknown reason, he chose to try to help his wife instead. According to the accident report, FBI investigators uncovered that Gonzales had advised both friends and relatives that he would die either Wednesday, the 6th of May, or Thursday, the 7th of May. He referred to his impending death on a daily basis throughout the week preceding the accident. Then, on the evening of the May 6th, Gonzales purchased a Smith and Wesson .357 magnum in a gun shop. After arriving at the San Francisco Airport, Gonzales took out two insurance policies totaling a $105,000. Then, shortly before boarding the flight to Reno, he displayed his gun to numerous friends at the airport and told one person he intended to shoot himself. He then boarded the flight to Reno, with a ticket to return the next day aboard Pacific Air Lines Flight 773. Newspaper accounts of the time give conflicting total amounts, but Gonzales may have had as much as $160,000 in life insurance at the time of the crash. That was a small fortune at the time especially considering it was an era when an average home in the San Francisco Bay Area could be bought for less than $25,000. Once in Reno, Gonzales spent the night visiting various gambling establishments. At one place a casino employee asked how he was doing, to which Gonzales replied, "It would not make any difference after tomorrow." Several people recalled seeing Gonzales carrying a small package while in Reno. A janitor at a gambling club where Gonzales was known to have spent a part of the evening discovered a cardboard carton for a Smith and Wesson .357 Magnum revolver and a gun cleaning kit in the wastepaper container. Both of these items were identified later by the seller as part of Gonzales' purchase on the preceding evening. Then is was time for the return trip. Gonzales went to the airport, and boarded the plane which was headed first for a stop in Stockton, when on to San Francisco. According to witnesses who got off the plane in Stockton, Gonzales was seated right behind the cockpit door. But Gonzales didn't act immediately. Why didn't he act sooner while the airliner was over the Sierras? Why did he wait until the airliner was almost to San Francisco? We'll probably never know. But about the time the Fairchild F-27A (N2770R) with 43 other souls aboard, started to descend for its landing, Gonzales pulled out his gun and kicked his way into the cockpit. Once in there, he raised the gun and put a bullet into the back of the pilot's head. Ernest Clark, 52, was dead. At 6:48 the aircraft radioed its last message. First officer Raymond Andress was heard saying, "Skipper's shot. We've been shot. Trying to help." There were more shots as Gonzales turned to the co-pilot and shot him.
	The twin-engine plane went into a steep, uncontrolled, high speed descent to crash into a hill and explode near San Ramon early in the morning of May 7, 1964. All 44, 41 passengers and 3 crew members, were dead on impact. There was a large crater with debris spread over a very

Headquarters of the Department of Defense, the Pentagon is one of the world's largest office buildings. It is twice the size of the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, and has three times the floor space of the Empire State Building in New York. The National Capitol could fit into any one of the five wedge-shaped sections. There are very few people throughout the United States who do not have some knowledge of the Pentagon. Many have followed news stories emanating from the defense establishment housed in this building. However, relatively few people have had the opportunity to visit with us.

The Pentagon is virtually a city in itself. Approximately 23,000 employees, both military and civilian, contribute to the planning and execution of the defense of our country. These people arrive daily from Washington, D.C. and its suburbs over approximately 30 miles of access highways, including express bus lanes and one of the newest subway systems in our country. They ride past 200 acres of lawn to park approximately 8,770 cars in 16 parking lots; climb 131 stairways or ride 19 escalators to reach offices that occupy 3,705,793 square feet. While in the building, they tell time by 4,200 clocks, drink from 691 water fountains, utilize 284 rest rooms, consume 4,500 cups of coffee, 1,700 pints of milk and 6,800 soft drinks prepared or served by a restaurant staff of 230 persons and dispensed in 1 dining room, 2 cafeterias, 6 snack bars, and an outdoor snack bar. The restaurant service is a privately run civilian operation under contract to the Pentagon.

Over 200,000 telephone calls are made daily through phones connected by 100,000 miles of telephone cable. The Defense Post Office handles about 1,200,000 pieces of mail monthly. Various libraries support our personnel in research and completion of their work. The Army Library alone provides 300,000 publications and 1,700 periodicals in various languages.

Stripped of its occupants, furniture and various decorations, the building alone is an extraordinary structure. Built during the early years of World War II, it is still thought of as one of the most efficient office buildings in the world. Despite 17.5 miles of corridors it takes only seven minutes to walk between any two points in the building.

The original site was nothing more than wasteland, swamps and dumps. 5.5 million cubic yards of earth, and 41,492 concrete piles contributed to the foundation of the building. Additionally, 680,000 tons of sand and gravel, dredged from the nearby Potomac River, were processed into 435,000 cubic yards of concrete and molded into the Pentagon form. The building was constructed in the remarkably short time of 16 months and completed on January 15, 1943 at an approximate cost of $83 million. It consolidated 17 buildings of the War Department and returned its investment within seven years.

What is Air Force One?

Most people have a general idea that the president's plane is a flying office with all sorts of high-tech equipment. But there are two essential facts about Air Force One that the general public isn't aware of.

"Air Force One" isn't technically a plane: It's simply the radio call name for any U.S. Air Force plane carrying the president of the United States. As soon as the president steps aboard an Air Force plane, that plane is referred to as Air Force One by the crew and all air traffic controllers, in order to avoid confusion with any other planes in the area.

If the president rides on an Army aircraft, that aircraft is Army One, and whenever he boards his specialized helicopter, that craft is Marine One.

Civilians generally refer to the physical plane itself as Air Force One.

Do Run all cables in a "Star" configuration. That is to say that they all emanate from, and are "homerun" to, one central location, known as the wiring hub. Visualize a wagon wheel, all of the spokes, start from on central point, known as the hub of the wheel.

Do Keep all cable runs to a maximum of 295 feet (for each run).

Do Maintain the twists of the pairs all the way to the point of termination, or no more than 0.5" (one half inch) untwisted

Do Not Skin off more than 1" of jacket when terminating

Do Make gradual bends of the cable, where necessary. No sharper than a 1" radius. (about the roundness of a half-dollar)

Do Not Allow the cable to be sharply bent, or kinked, at any time. This can cause permanent damage to the cables' interior.

Do Dress the cables neatly with cable ties. Use low to moderate pressure.

Do Not Over tighten cable ties. We recommend Hook and Loop (Velcro) Cable Ties for commercial installations.

Do Cross-connect cables (where necessary), using cat 5E rated punch blocks and components.

Do Not Splice or bridge category-5E cable at any point. There should never be multiple appearances of category 5E cable.

Do Use low to moderate force when pulling cable.

Do Not Use excessive force when pulling cable.

Do Use cable pulling lubricant for cable runs that may otherwise require great force to install. (You will be amazed at what a difference the cable lubricant will make)

Do Not Use oil, or any other lubricant, not specifically designed for cable pulling. Oil, or other lubricants, can infiltrate the cable, causing damage to the insulation.

Do Keep cat 5E cables as far away from potential sources of EMI (electrical cables, transformers, light fixtures, etc.) as possible.

Do Not Tie cables to electrical conduits, or lay cables on electrical fixtures.

Do Install proper cable supports, spaced no more than 5 feet apart.

Do Not Install cable that is supported by the ceiling tiles (this is unsafe, and is a violation of the building codes).

Do Always label every termination point. Use a unique number for each cable segment. The idea here, is to make moves, adds, changes, and troubleshooting as simple as possible.

Do Always test every installed segment with a cable tester. "Toning" alone, is not an acceptable test.

Do Always install jacks in such a way as to prevent dust and other contaminants from settling on the contacts. The contacts (pins) of the jack should face up on flush mounted plates, or left, right, or down (never up) on surface mount boxes.

Do Always leave extra slack on the cables, neatly coiled up in the ceiling or nearest concealed place. It is recommended that you leave at least 5 feet at the work outlet side, and 10 feet at the patch panel (wiring hub) side.

Do Not Never install cables "taught" in the ceiling, or elsewhere. A good installation should have the cables loose, but never sagging.

Do Always use grommets to protect the cable where passing through metal studs or anything that can possibly cause damage to them.

Do Choose either 568A or 568B wiring standard, before you begin your project. Wire all jacks and patch panels for the same wiring scheme (A or B).

Do Not Mix 568A and 568B wiring on the same installation.

Do Not (1 exception) Use staples on category-5E cable that crimp the cable tightly. The common T-18 and T-25 cable staples are not recommended for category 5E cable. The T-59 insulated staple gun is ideal for fastening cat5 & 6 and fiber optic cabling as it does not put any excess pressure on the cable.

Do Always obey all local, and national, fire and building codes. Be sure to "firestop" all cables that penetrate a firewall. Use plenum rated cable where it is mandated.

How to make a CAT5/e lan cable.

A good CAT5 termination has a proper wire crimp, a wire insulation strain relief crimp and a cable strain relief crimp. Also important, is not unwinding the wires more than necessary, maintaining the twists as far as possible is important, but don't let it stop you from inserting the wires as far as possible. I've made a lot of these cables personally, and this is how I do it.

Strip the cables Jacket back one full inch.

Untwist the wires back to within 1/8" of the jacket.

Arrange the wires in the order in which you want to crimp them, (ie. 568A, 568B).

Grasp the wires firmly, between your thumb and forefinger, flatten them, and even wiggle

them a bit, to take out the curliness, (concentrate your efforts on the bottom 1/2") the

wires must lay flat and together, aligned as close as possible.

While holding the wires firmly, cut off the the wires 1/2" from the cables jacket (Cut the wires with some sharp wire strippers or even high quality scissors, avoid wire cutters that flatten the ends of the wires insulating material, this makes stuffing the wires very difficult.)

Stuff the wires into the connector, making sure the wires stay lined up. The wires should reach the end of the little tube they are in, if possible, or at least past the farthest point of that "little Gold Plated thingy" above it, which will terminate it.
The jacket should go even with the end of the first indent if possible, it's a strain relief for the cable.

Insert it into the crimping tool, and Crimp it!

Cable jacket should be inserted past the strain relief crimp, (see picture below).

In air, sound waves travel at around 330 metres/second (when the air temperature is 0 degrees centigrade).

At 40 degrees centigrade (a very very hot day) the velocity increases to 354 metres/second in air.

Sound in water goes much faster, around 1500 metres/second.

A Sonic Boom

A sonic boom is the thunder-like noise a person on the ground hears when an aircraft or other type of aerospace vehicle flies overhead faster than the speed of sound or supersonic.

Air reacts like a fluid to supersonic objects. As objects travel through the air, the air molecules are pushed aside with great force and this forms a shock wave much like a boat creates a bow wave. The bigger and heavier the aircraft, the more air it displaces.

The Cause

The shock wave forms a cone of pressurized air molecules which move outward and rearward in all directions and extend to the ground. As the cone spreads across the landscape along the flight path, they create a continuous sonic boom along the full width of the cone's base. The sharp release of pressure, after the buildup by the shock wave, is heard as the sonic boom.

The change in air pressure associated with a sonic boom is only a few pounds per square foot -- about the same pressure change experienced riding an elevator down two or three floors. It is the rate of change, the sudden onset of the pressure change, that makes the sonic boom audible.

All aircraft generate two cones, at the nose and at the tail. They are usually of similar strength and the time interval between the two as they reach the ground is primarily dependent on the size of the aircraft and its altitude. Most people on the ground cannot distinguish between the two and they are usually heard as a single sonic boom. Sonic booms created by vehicles the size and mass of the space shuttle are very distinguishable and two distinct booms are easily heard.

General Factors Associated With Sonic Booms

There are several factors that can influence sonic booms -- weight, size, and shape of the aircraft or vehicle, plus its altitude, attitude and flight path, and weather or atmospheric conditions.

A larger and heavier aircraft must displace more air and create more lift to sustain flight, compared with small, light aircraft. Therefore, they will create sonic booms stronger and louder than those of smaller, lighter aircraft. The larger and heavier the aircraft, the stronger the shock waves will be.

Altitude determines the distance shock waves travel before reaching the ground, and this has the most significant effect on intensity. As the shock cone gets wider, and it moves outward and downward, its strength is reduced. Generally, the higher the aircraft, the greater the distance the shock wave must travel, reducing the intensity of the sonic boom. Of all the factors influencing sonic booms, increasing altitude is the most effective method of reducing sonic boom intensity.

The width of the boom "carpet" beneath the aircraft is about one mile for each 1000 feet of altitude. An aircraft, for example, flying supersonic at 50,000 feet can produce a sonic boom cone about 50 miles wide. The sonic boom, however, will not be uniform. Maximum intensity is directly beneath the aircraft, and decreases as the lateral distance from the flight path increases until it ceases to exist because the shock waves refract away from the ground. The lateral spreading of the sonic boom depends only upon altitude, speed and the atmosphere -- and is independent of the vehicle's shape, size, and weight.

The ratio of aircraft length to maximum cross sectional area also influences the intensity of the sonic boom. The longer and more slender the aircraft, the weaker the shock waves. The fatter and more blunt the vehicle, the stronger the shock wave can be.

Increasing speeds above Mach 1.3 results in only small changes in shock wave strength.

The direction of travel and strength of shock waves are influenced by wind, speed, and direction, and by air temperature and pressure. At speeds slightly greater than Mach 1, their effect can be significant, but their influence is small at speeds greater than Mach 1.3. Distortions in the shape of the sonic boom signatures can also be influenced by local air turbulence near the ground. This, too, will cause variations in the overpressure levels.

Aircraft maneuvering can cause distortions in shock wave patterns. Some maneuvers -- pushovers, acceleration and "S" turns -- can amplify the intensity of the shock wave. Hills, valleys and other terrain features can create multiple reflections of the shock waves and affect intensity.

Overpressure

Sonic booms are measured in pounds per square foot of overpressure. This is the amount of the increase over the normal atmospheric pressure which surrounds us (2,116 psf/14.7 psi).

At one pound overpressure, no damage to structures would be expected.

Overpressures of 1 to 2 pounds are produced by supersonic aircraft flying at normal operating altitudes. Some public reaction could be expected between 1.5 and 2 pounds.

Rare minor damage may occur with 2 to 5 pounds overpressure.

As overpressure increases, the likelihood of structural damage and stronger public reaction also increases. Tests, however, have shown that structures in good condition have been undamaged by overpressures of up to 11 pounds.

Sonic booms produced by aircraft flying supersonic at altitudes of less than 100 feet, creating between 20 and 144 pounds overpressure, have been experienced by humans without injury.

Damage to eardrums can be expected when overpressures reach 720 pounds. Overpressures of 2160 pounds would have to be generated to produce lung damage.

Typical overpressure of aircraft types are:

SR-71: 0.9 pounds, speed of Mach 3, 80,000 feet

Concorde SST: 1.94 pounds, speed of Mach 2, 52,000 feet

F-104: 0.8 pounds, speed of Mach 1.93, 48,000 feet Space Shuttle: 1.25 pounds, speed of Mach 1.5, 60,000 feet, landing approach.

The President of the United States flies in a plane called Air Force One. The plane has a bedroom, bathroom, exercise room and an office for the President, and can be re-fueled in the air so that it never has to land to get gas!. The Boeing 747, commonly nicknamed the "Jumbo Jet", is a long-haul, widebody commercial airliner manufactured by Boeing. Known for its impressive size, it is among the world's most recognizable aircraft. First flown commercially in 1970, it has held the passenger capacity record for 37 years and was the first commercial wide-body aircraft.

The four-engine 747, produced by Boeing's Commercial Airplane unit, uses a double decker configuration for part of its length. The hump created by the upper deck has made the 747 a highly recognizable icon of air travel. A typical three-class layout accommodates 416 passengers, while a two-class layout accommodates a maximum of 524 passengers.

The 747-400, the latest version in service, flies at high-subsonic speeds of Mach 0.85 (567 mph or 913 km/h), and features an intercontinental range of 7,260 nautical miles (8,350 mi, 13,450 km).
The 747 was expected to become obsolete after sales of 400 units, but it has outlived many of its critics' expectations and production passed the 1,000 mark in 1993. As of June 2007 1387 planes had been built, with 120 more in various configurations on order. The latest development of the aircraft, the 747-8, is planned to enter service in 2009.

It was a time when we all thought nobody was crazy enough to take a gun aboard a airliner and threaten to kill people, let alone actually shoot someone. Well on Pacific Air Lines Flight 773, that's exactly what happened.

According to newspaper accounts of the time, Francisco Gonzales would constantly threaten people, especially members of his family. He said that they would die alongside him, by his hand.
